When people are new to Lean, one of the biggest pitfalls is trying to explain everything at once. A full Value Stream Map—with its timelines, metrics, and terminology—can feel overwhelming. Lean consultants often make this rookie mistake: they introduce complex tools before building a basic understanding.
Instead, start simple.
I like to use a very basic principle:
Anything you do more than once is a process — and the better you think about it once, the more time you save every next time.
To guide people through this, I ask just a few straightforward questions:
- Where does the process start? What inputs are needed, and who provides them? (Your supplier.)
- What are the main steps in the process?Keep the list high-level and uncomplicated.
- What is the desired result? What output are you trying to create, and who is your customer?
With just these five elements — Supplier, Input, Process, Output, Customer — you can complete a simple SIPOC template.
This high-level process map is often more than enough to spark reflection, uncover waste, and establish clarity. For people new to Lean, a SIPOC template provides a gentle way to start thinking in processes without drowning in details.
Remember:
Simple doesn’t mean easy.
But starting with a basic SIPOC template helps people understand their work, communicate more clearly, and gradually build toward more advanced Lean tools.
Keep it simple. And stay humble.
